Evidence that God exists

RECENTLY, THE STAR newspaper claimed that a well-known music producer said there is no evidence God exists (September 18). Sadly, he did not put forward any arguments to show that there is no evidence that God does not exist.

Proving the existence of God should not be treated like proving the existence of animals and other material objects. First of all, God does not have physical features than can be examined, touched, seen and tasted. God is a spirit and has to be tested as a spirit. In other words, the existence of God can be proven in a similar way to how one tests for phenomena that one cannot see, though it can be experienced.

Furthermore, the concept of God is important in understanding God. There must be a first being that brought all other beings into being. And that being would be the greatest of all beings. That being would be God, because no other being brought that being into existence. Since there must be a start to everything, including the world and the smallest molecule, then that reality speaks to the existence of God who made all things. So, the original creator must be God.

The very essence of the existence of life is that there is a cause and effect. However, there must be a cause which had no cause. In other words, either the egg was first or the chicken was first, and whichever one was first is the first cause that caused everything else to flow. It is not necessary to even work out whether it was the egg or the chicken, but one of them was first.

Furthermore, the heavens declare the glory of God. Nature points to the glory, majestic greatness and goodness of God. So many things in nature are indicative of God. The sheer masterpiece that this world is points to an intelligent design. The world did not come into existence through some skatta shot approach. It is said that if the earth were any closer to the sun, we would all be burnt, and if we were any further away from the sun we would freeze to death. The healing properties of the human body show that healing is possible outside of medicine and, therefore, God can supernaturally heal persons.

BIRTH OF JESUS IS NOT SO INCREDULOUS

It seems clear that God gave us phenomena in nature so that we can understand the nature of God and what He does. So, the Virgin Birth of Jesus is not so incredulous since there are microscopic organisms and some reptiles, such as the boa constrictor and the komodo dragon, that can reproduce without the help of a male. Lightning, thunder tornadoes, hurricanes and earthquakes point to the power of God and our powerlessness.

Additionally, most of the universe is unknown and the galaxies might very well be unknowable. Similarly, God is never fully known. There is always a being not fully known, and that shows the existence of God, who likewise is largely unknown. God has to reveal himself to us and still we never fully understand God because his ways and thoughts are way above ours.

And so, God reveals himself to human beings, and so God has to be experienced. Many persons can testify to the life-transforming effect God has had on their lives. National heroes such as Sam Sharpe, Paul Bogle and George William Gordon believed in God as revealed in Jesus the Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit. This transformed them into leaders who fought against the odds. This belief in the existence of God propelled them to make a significant difference in the history of Jamaica.

The overwhelming reasonable evidence is that God exists.
