Campion ‘Dancehall’ College
THE EDITOR, Sir:
ON SATURDAY, October 26, Campion College once again hosted a dancehall event that went on until 2:45 a.m. on Sunday. Not only was the music deafening, it actually intensified after 1:00 a.m.
Recently, Deacon Peter Espeut wrote a column in The Gleaner
concerning the Government’s efforts to revisit current noise legislation. Deacon Espeut wondered if the Government would take into consideration the needs of ordinary Jamaicans. It is clear that Campion College does not.
It baffles me that a Catholic, Christian school would think that it is appropriate to raise money for itself in a way that is a direct assault on its neighbours. How Campion reconciles that with the command to “love your neighbour as yourself”is beyond my comprehension.
It is particularly galling in light of the fact that a significant portion of the families it serves are part of Jamaica’s wealthy elite. They should be able to help Campion raise funds in a way that does not deprive persons of their right to the comfortable enjoyment of their homes and appropriate rest. I’m sure they would not tolerate the disturbance created by a dancehall event next door to them.
I do hope the Government does take into consideration the needs of ordinary Jamaicans as it considers revisions to noise legislation. I also hope that Campion will come to conversion and cease its periodic assaults on its neighbours. REV MARK HALLINAN, S.J. Pastor
