Div 2 Championship shows promise – JRLA
JAMAICA RUGBY League Association (JRLA) vice-chairman Adrian Hall says this season’s Rugby League: Around the Grounds National Division Two Championship is primed to be the best one yet.
Hall was speaking after the opening round of games on Saturday and said that the tournament would further showcase the work that the JRLA has been doing to introduce youngsters across the island to the sport.
“We continue to grow our footprint in this expansion competition and give young and developing players a genuine pathway to top-level rugby league,” he said. “In 2018, we saw Jowayne Forbes and Jevaughn Thomas excel for St Bess (St Elizabeth). Both earned full scholarships to university. It was a similar story for Anthony FindlayHounds and Maurice Morant from the [Cedar Grove] Cyclones. We expect a tough contest and look forward to some new stars of our game emerging in this year’s competition. Fans can follow the progress of the teams through our social media and revamped website at rljam.com.”
In Group A, the Mona Pelicans defeated St Bess Sledgehammers 24-12 at the B.B. Coke High School field in St Elizabeth. Akeem Kitson and Andrew Dixon got two tries each in that game, with Jordan Maitland and O’Dayne Edwards also recording tries of their own. Showayne Collins, Jevaughn Thomas, and former national player Kennardo Morgan all got on the scoresheet for the Sledgehammers.
Also in Group A, defending champions Caribbean Maritime University Spartans went down 16-4 to the new-look Duhaney Park Firestorm, while the Cyclones defeated the Portmore Eliminators 42-2 in Group B.
