Growing the economy

-

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I DON’T believe Jamaica’s hope for a prosperous future can rest in the hands of politicians alone, because it is extremely difficult for those who are engaging in political battle for power to be the main source of strategic thinking. That is why it is imperative that Jamaicans should cultivate a business minded consciousness to help grow the economy.

For far too long people are afraid, or may be reluctant, to be innovative and to exploit their gifts and talents to create their own wealth. Furthermore, not everyone is going to be fortunate to apply for a job and be successful. While people should start to think outside the box and be innovative, the Government’s role is critical in facilitating and creating a safe and supportive society to do business.

There are ways which the Government can help to create that environment for growth. This includes reducing the taxes on small businesses and giving them time to grow. Specifically, give small businesses that have potential a grant and challenge them to employ at least three persons within 16 months. This will encourage more people to do business and ultimately the country will see a reduction in unemployment, and growth in the economy.

Businesses are the driving force in an economy. More businesses equate to greater employment, more taxes for the Government, less need for social services, and maybe even less crime. Ultimately, the Government will have more money at its disposal to spend on essential services, increase wages for public-sector workers and be able to allocate more to members of parliament to spend in their constituencies.
