Together we can, together we will

- RUTH BAKERGARDNER Acting Head of Department DLIS UWI Mona

THE DEPARTMENT of Library and Information Studies (DLIS) of The University of the West Indies, Mona, extends heartiest congratulations to the Library and Information Association of Jamaica (LIAJA) on its 70th anniversary. This is indeed a significant milestone and the theme, ‘Celebrating the Past: Influencing the Future’ summarises not only the role of the association, but the role of information professionals globally.

Since its inception in 1971, DLIS has produced almost 1,500 graduates from its two undergraduate and three graduate programmes. Many of these have gone on to serve the association in various positions and continue to make their mark in the provision of quality information services globally. The department also provides ongoing continuing professional development through its Summer Institute. In addition, it facilitates persons who desire to pursue individual courses based on their interest and job demands. These activities are aimed at ensuring that members of the association remain relevant and demonstrate that relevance in their professional duties.

The partnership between DLIS and LIAJA has been mutually beneficial. As we look towards the future, we will continue to partner to ensure that together we help our country to achieve the sustainable development goals. Information is the basis for sound decision-making and we are cognisant of our roles as providers of information in galleries, libraries, archives and museums. As society changes the way it produces, stores and disseminate information, we constantly adapt our methods and content to meet the changing needs of our future information professionals. In so doing, the DLIS aims to ensure the association makes an indelible mark on the future.
