Achieving any goal he has set in his mind
HIS PERSONALITY is infectious, and from the get go, you know he’s a no-nonsense person, who is likely to achieve any goal he has set in his mind. As a young boy, William Mitchell was encouraged by his mother to attend the Grace & Staff Community Development Foundation’s Homework Centre on Tower Street.
While attending Holy Family
Primary, Campion College and St George’s College, it was at the Homework Centre that Mitchell built, some of the close relationships he has maintained over the years.
“I used to tease them, that if they put a bed in the Centre, I would sleep there, as it has always been a family experience for me. I was a very talkative person, and they not only tolerated me but channelled my expressive nature into positive ideas. That’s how I began volunteering as a teacher before I finished high school,” Mitchell said.
A graduate of the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism, Mitchell was able to finance his education throughout High School and University with the financial assistance from Grace and Staff’s education programme.
“I want to thank Grace & Staff for helping me to realise a personal journey. There were times when I wavered and I took time off from school. They allowed me the space to find myself and they continued to support me when I resumed school,” Mitchell said.
He further credits the Homework Centre for his development, as he indicated that the facility brought a group of like-minded persons together. “It was a safe space where individuals could share their feelings and not feel degraded. It became a support system for us,” Mitchell said.
