Hosanna Prep School’s Choristers singing praises to the King
HHOSANNA PREPARATORY School’s choristers copped all of five national trophies in this year’s Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) National Festival of the Performing Art. This added yet another set of trophies to their collection.
According to Charles Rodney, choir master and music teacher of the 20-year-old private school, the outstanding performances of the choristers have set in motion their anniversary celebrations and provide the school with the firstever performance at the National Mello-Go-Roun in Kingston.
He noted that the Montego Bay school’s music programme is committed to develop the talent of budding musicians and singers and that the performing arts have been one of the school’s driving forces on the agenda of extra-curricular activities.
Doreth Chambers, principal, said, “We have set a high standard nationally, winning numerous awards, in our 20 years. We did it in speech. Before that, dance was dominating, as we got most of our awards over the years in dance, but in this 2018-19 season, we got five national trophies in the area of music,” Chambers said.
Music, dance and speech are but some of the extra-curricular activities that have set Hosanna Preparatory School apart year after year.
“The children are provided with an inclusive education, where they are encouraged to explore their potential through clubs and societies such as Brownies, the Cub Scout Pack, along with the Science and Environment Club, chess, K Kids and Culture Club (speech, drama, dance and music)”, she continued.
Gymnastic is another area that students are gravitating toward these days along with the academic clubs such as the quiz club and the spelling and Mathematics clubs.
“Each student must be a part of at least two clubs or activities, they might be a brownie and a dancer, a Cub Scout and a footballer, yes, they are integrally involved because the co-curricular activities are integrated into the curriculum.”
“The activities of these clubs are incorporated in their writings, as they are asked to give reasons for liking the club and give deep thoughts of future involvement in them and the career options that may be pursued from such involvement.
Chamber emphasised that there is a balanced approach to our teaching as our mission is to develop the whole person.
