Keeping your cards safe

-

CARD SAFETY is often a worry for those who use them. Whether it is the fear of someone stealing a debit or credit card or worse, using them to rack up huge bills, card safety is an important issue that careful attention must be given to.

However, although card safety may be a ticklish issue, it is still a safer alternative to carrying around wads of cash each day. Here are a few tips to aid in keeping your cards safe and easing your worries.

First, be cautious about disclosing your PIN numbers, especially over the telephone. Know who are speaking to before you readily rattle off your numbers. If you are uncertain about the financial reputation of a company or individual, it is best to not do business with him/her.

Never put your account or PIN numbers on the outside of an envelope or chequebook. It is best to devise a smart way of remembering your numbers without having to write them down on a slip of paper that you walk around with. If you can’t remember the numbers, then write them and leave them in a safe area, such as a safety deposit or in a sealed box at home. It may be inconvenient for you to have to return home for your number but it is much safer than having someone steal your cards and gaining access to your account.

Do not write your PIN number on your debit card or carry it around in your wallet. If you must carry it around, separate it from your card. For example, if you are carrying your card in your wallet, then put the paper with your number in your pocket. Never leave the number in your handbag.

Most persons have a habit of leaving receipts of debit and credit card payments at a store or at an ATM. Do not do this. Put all receipts in a plastic bag and store them in a safe place. It is advisable to draw a line through blank spaces on charge or debits lips above the total so the amount cannot be changed.

When your cards get old, cut them up, making sure to cut through the account number and the magnetic strips on credit cards before disposing of them.

Periodically check your account activity, especially if you bank online. Compare the balance with all your receipts and report any discrepancies as soon as possible to the bank.

Keeping your cards safe is integral to enjoying the convenience they offer.
