Tivoli face ‘beatable’ Vere

TIVOLI GARDENS head coach Philip Williams says his team must be more clinical in front of goal to secure all three points when they play last-placed Vere United in the Red Stripe Premier League at the Wembley Centre of Excellence in Hayes, Clarendon on Sunday.

Tivoli, who are coming off a 2-2 draw with UWI, are 10th in the league on 20 points while Vere have 14.

Tivoli have won three of their last five matches in the league and Williams said they are desperate to secure all three points against their opponents to improve their chances of a top-six spot.

“I think from here on, three points is what will help us in terms of our ambition of making it into the top six,” Williams said.

“This is one of the games that we have down as ‘winnable’ because we are definitely going there for three points. I think one of the problems that we had in the last game is that we were not putting away our chances, so scoring goals will be one of our objectives in this game.”

Williams said that after a poor start to the season, which saw his team languishing in the bottom two of the 12-team table for the most of the first round, his players are more focused and confident going forward.

“I think that my players are confident because they are looking much better than they did in the first round of the competition,” Williams said.

“We have been doing a lot of work in all areas of the field and with the addition of [Glendon] ‘Admiral’ Bailey to coaching, it definitely helped us to get them focused for long periods. We are a team on the up and we are definitely looking to capitalise on the form that we are in.”
