Pete Salmon pleased with contribution to Scorpions win on debut
JAMAICA SCORPIONS off-spinner Pete Salmon is over the moon following his debut performance against the Guyana Jaguars in their Regional Four-Day encounter on the weekend.
Salmon put in a masterful performance in the second innings to claim a career-best seven for 57 from 25 overs to help the Scorpions to their first win of the 2020 campaign.
The 27-year-old former Innswood High School player now joins Nial Smith of Guyana and Camarie Boyce of Barbados to take five or more wickets on debut this season.
Salmon, who claimed his maiden wicket in the first innings when he trapped opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul, says it was a dream debut with the ball and he can’t wait to get another chance to showcase his skills.
“It’s a wonderful feeling to know that I was able to contribute to the team’s first win of the season and I could not have asked for a better start to my career,” Salmon said.
The St Catherine CC player said it was a total team effort in the side’s victory charge; however, he knew he had to play a key role once the team had set a decent total.
“I knew I had to take responsibility from the start, because most of the Guyana top-order batters are left-handers,” he said. “I knew once I got the ball in the right areas, I knew I could do some damage.”
The right-arm off-spinner said his most dangerous delivery was the ball that did not spin; however, he feels there is room for improvement as the season progresses.
“There is still a long way to go in the season, and I want to continue to work hard and don’t get ahead of myself too much,” he said.
While his debut with the ball was superb, Salmon’s effort with the bat was one he would want to forget, as he failed to score a run in either inning.
The right-hander will get a chance to remedy that situation this weekend when the Scorpions take on the Leeward Islands Hurricanes at the Trelawny Stadium, starting on Friday.
