Orchids to the world!

-

YOU ARE cordially invited to attend the Montego Bay Orchid Club’s staging of its 29th Annual Orchid Show and Sale, on Saturday, March 7, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, March 8, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The theme will be ‘A World of Orchids’. The show will be held on the grounds of Pier 1 on the Waterfront, Montego Bay.

The world of orchids is extremely diverse.

Miniature plants as small as a thimble with flowers no larger than a pin’s head vs Dendrobiums and Vandas six to eight feet tall with flowers natural spread six to eight inches in diameter.

Flower form that imitate bugs, birds, bees, butterflies, animals and other flowers; hues that span the colours of the rainbow, from the purest white to the deepest purple-blue-black.

Orchids grow underground, with only the inflorescence appearing above ground, in the undergrowth, on the floor of the forest, on rocks in full sun, in the middle of open fields, at the edge of the sea or in swamps, as well as at the top of trees; [in pots, baskets, mounted on stick, bark, plaques, and in gardens all over the world].

Orchids can be found in all climates except Antarctica.

There are orchids without leaves – ‘ghost orchids’. Others are deciduous and shed leaves during the dry season to conserve moisture. Still others are grown for the colours/patterns of the foliage – ’Jewel orchids’.

I hope I have piqued your interest. Come learn what makes an orchid an orchid and how to grow them successfully. There will be lectures and demonstrations. Come see the displays created by our local orchid societies, garden club, vendors and amateur growers.

There will be orchids and other plants on sale, as well as everything you will need to grow them well. Raffles, arts, crafts, woodwork, and refreshment will also be on sale. There will be multiple gate prizes daily.

Come sign up for membership in the Montego Bay Orchid Club and receive an orchid. Then join us on the second Tuesday of each month, 5 p.m.; Sea Wind-on-the-Bay, Freeport.
