Voting for a secretary general of the OAS

-

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I WISH to express my deep concern for the sovereignty of our country, the Caribbean and the Latin American region to be able to freely exercise their independence without fear of being shackled, muzzled or bullied to do anyone’s bidding.

I pray that our leaders will remain strong and fearless to stand up for justice, brotherhood, and peace, and not give in to pressure from those who only seek to advance their own self-interest at all costs.

I am sure that all are cognisant of the character and design of the current secretary general of the Organization of the American State (OAS), Mr Luis Almagro, and his backbitings, while disregarding the instituted laws of the United Nations.

The governments and peoples of these regions need a secretary general of the OAS who respects national sovereignty, right to selfdetermination, dignity, equity, and fairness. It is my firm belief that Ms Maria Fernanda Espinosa, former Ecuadorian foreign affairs minister and former president of the United Nations General Assembly, is the most suitable candidate for this position.

I, therefore, implore you, our prime minister, Mr Andrew Holiness, in representing the Jamaicans at the election on March 20, 2020, to do so with good judgement and fairness, upholding the dignity of your people and let history judge you kindly with a legacy that you can, along with all of us, be proud of.

Emphasise for us that we are not for sale, and endeavour to let unity, justice and peace reign in these regions.
