GUIDELINES FOR FUNERAL HOMES

Ministry of Health and Wellness Guidelines to Funeral Homes for Handling COVID-19 Bodies Some of the recommenda­tions contained in the protocol circulated to the operators of funeral homes for the handling of COVID-19 victims include:

■ Hepatitis B vaccinatio­n is required for all personnel who are likely to come into contact with dead bodies, such as healthcare worker, mortuary staff, funeral workers, etc.

■ In cases where family members wish to view the body, this should be done under strict supervisio­n. Great emphasis should be placed on hand hygiene, and family members should be instructed not to touch or kiss the body.

■ All staff should be trained in infection prevention and control procedures.

■ A high standard of personal hygiene should be adopted.

■ When handling dead bodies:

• Avoid direct contact with blood or body fluids from the dead body.

• Wear personal protective equipment, including:

• Gloves

• Water-repellent gown

• Long-sleeved gown

• Surgical mask

• Goggles or face shield to protect eyes

• Appropriat­e footwear (for example, water boots)

■ Ensure wounds, cuts and abrasions are covered with waterproof bandages or dressings.

■ Avoid injury, both during examinatio­n of dead body and in dealing with waste disposal and decontamin­ation.

■ Do NOT smoke, drink or eat. Do NOT touch eyes, mouth or nose while working with the dead body.

■ In case of accidental exposure to blood or body fluids, wash area thoroughly, report to supervisor, and seek medical advice.

■ Re burial: dead bodies with COVID-19 can be buried or cremated.
