When will some Jamaicans take coronavirus seriously?

-

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I really don’t think some of the citizens of Jamaica know the severity of the COVID-19 virus. If you look at the daily happenings, you will realise the stupidity of some of the citizens. The town centres are still jam-packed like an ordinary day, supermarkets are still packed, and some individuals are about their daily business as if it’s a normal day.

Even last week, there was an article published in THE STAR about inner-city residents in the Kingston area hosting parties on rooftops and, on the other hand, persons are fleeing curfew orders. When will we become cognisant of the fact that this is how the virus spread?

Since the virus made entry, I cannot even emphasise how much the prime minister and his team have stressed that citizens should restrict unnecessary movements and yet still there are persons not adhering. From the look of things, I really wouldn’t want to think that the citizens don’t understand; however, that’s the solid conclusion that I had to draw because of their actions.

Over the past few days, we saw what took place when the quarantine order was placed on the parish of St Catherine; families packed up and began to flee. Let’s not forget about the 100 BPO workers who fled and gave false addresses when they realised they were under tight scrutiny.

ACT RESPONSIBLY

The Government went as far as telling people that they must wear a mask when traversing in public spaces. Funny enough, persons are well attired in their masks. However, they are not being correctly worn because it is over the forehead or underneath the chin. The masks are to be worn as personal protective equipment and not as a fashion attire. Even on social media, Instagram to be exact, I saw two prominent Jamaicans, Spice and Deno Crazy, pleading with the people to take heed as it relates to the virus.

Let me just say, the COVID-19 virus can’t move around by itself so if we are able to restrict the unnecessary movements, we will be able to curtail the virus. The coronavirus is no joke and it’s spreading like wildfire; so I admonish the citizens of Jamaica to act more responsibly and adhere to the guidelines given, because it is for your own health and safety.
