Time come, Dr Phillips
THE EDITOR, Madam:
I AM not a doctor; however, I am a concerned Jamaican and supporter of the People’s National Party (PNP). Given the present political climate, with several scandals dogging the Andrew Holness administration, and the several mismanagement of communication under the COVID19 crisis, it is clear that Jamaicans will have a lot to consider when they go to the polls, should the prime minister call a general election, which is imminent. Should a general election be called, the Opposition PNP has work to do. This won’t be easy work because a lot is at stake and the Opposition, therefore, needs a leader that is healthy, and has the stamina to bring a message of hope to the Jamaican people across the length and breadth of the country.
Given the recent announcement about Dr Peter Phillips’ health, and what we know about the seriousness of his diagnosis, I question whether the leader of the Opposition will be able to effectively manage his health, and do the rigorous campaign that is needed for an election that is shaping up to be very close. I think given the cloud of uncertainty, the leader of the Opposition should step aside. This will make way for an appropriate person to take the reins of the party within the guidelines of the People’s National Party’s constitution, and lead the party to the next general election.
There comes a time when it is prudent to act in the best interest of our country, and this is the time. Dr Phillips needs to realise that ‘time come’ for him to choose what is best for the country and party over his political interest.
