God is in control, but we need to observe COVID-19 protocols

-

THE EDITOR, Madam:

THE JAMAICA Umbrella Groups of Churches (JUGC) is deeply concerned about the recent upsurge in COVID19 cases in Jamaica and, in particular, about reports of the flagrant disregard of many of the regulations established to minimise the spread of the disease. We take note that members of two congregations were numbered among those who have breached the protocols and wish to encourage continued compliance by the faith community as a whole.

While many types of gatherings are important for civic and economic well-being, religious worship has particularly profound significance to communities and individuals and is at the heart of many faith traditions. The JUGC hopes that as we continue to practise our faith we will continue to demonstrate corporate responsibility amid the current crisis, that all Jamaicans will not become weary of observing all the protocols, not just in compliance with the regulations but as acts of love and solidarity with others.

CONTINUOUS PRAYERS

The JUGC is committed to continuing vigilant and strict adherence to the protocols established by the Ministry of Health and Wellness. We offer our prayers for the families of those who have lost their lives due to COVID-19 infection, as well as those who continue their journey to recovery. The JUGC also continues to pray for the health and safety of the many workers in the health sector who continue to work tirelessly to help to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. We, therefore, call upon all wellthinking Jamaicans to continue to strictly adhere to the established protocols.

We encourage calm at this time as we firmly believe that God is in control and will never leave or forsake us.

May God continue to watch over the citizens of Jamaica.

REV DR PETER GARTH Chairman

JUGC
