TO GRANDPA, FROM SOME OF HIS GRANDCHILDREN

GABRIELLA STEELE, 13 YEARS OLD

-

D for determined, dedicated and dependable – you always showed up for me Grandpa

K for kind, kingly and knowledgeable – on so many topics, from the serious to pure foolishness

With all odds against you for justice you stand up strong, and as your grandchildren, though gone,

We stand behind you to carry it on. A grandfather to warriors, who rides on chariots,

Full of love, lifelong lessons, and uncountable blessings

For you we will make the future bright, Your death could never fade the light, of a battle so chivalrous like fighting for equal rights.

AIDAN PRICE, NINE YEARS OLD

I love how Grandpa always had the patience to do homework with me every week. He always came when I called. When I was mad or sad, he always had the right words to make me feel better.

MARLEY PRICE, SEVEN YEARS OLD

Grandpa was amazing, nice and always caring – he would come for me at dancing, at the hairdresser. And when I got frustrated, he’d always wait patiently and help me cool down. He was so great at being a grandpa, an uncle and a father.

SELAH PRICE, FIVE YEARS OLD

Grandpa was so kind and he took such good care of me – he always laughed with me.

JOELLE POWE, 22 YEARS OLD

I was always eager to engage in a conversation with Uncle D.K. Whenever I saw him, I spent minutes before greeting him conjuring up smart ideas to discuss. It never went very far, because I wanted to show what I knew. Then I went to college and came back well-read and curious. We spoke about Tacky’s rebellion, Paul Bogle, and Nanny. All that time I spent contemplating what to say would have been better spent asking him questions.
