JAS has remained steadfast
SINCE I NCEPTION of this initiative i n 2003, the JAS has remained steadfast in its commitment to not only encourage Jamaicans to recognise, appreciate and consume more local produce and products, but has also aimed at ensuring substantial growth in domestic agriculture, thereby building on the nation’s food security and nutrition.
The campaign’s vision bolstered by its catchy theme, ‘Grow what we eat, and eat what we grow’, reminds us that our increased consumption of Jamaican agricultural produce means increased local food production, which results in vital support for the country’s farmers, local businesses, manufacturers and, ultimately, the sustainable growth of our economy.
By choosing to eat Jamaican, we’re choosing to spend on fresher, tastier and nutritious products that have been grown and processed locally, with the added bonus of making a significant contribution to local families and communities, as money spent is reinvested in businesses and services.
I’m pleased with the efforts of the JAS to embrace new initiatives to integrate local produce in all diets, including the hospitality industry and government institutions. Your partnership with the Jamaica Moves programme, aimed at appealing to young people and promoting healthy lifestyles, is commendable. These engagements also serve as a catalyst for the development and growth of our economy through the diversification of our farms, greater focus on value-added products, as well as small business development. Undoubtedly, these initiatives have the potential to positively impact local production and ensure the stability of the agricultural sector and nation-building.
Congratulations to the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) as you commemorate the 17th anniversary of the ‘Eat Jamaican’ Campaign. May your future investments in promoting and celebrating the goodness of Jamaican produce and products continue to bear success.
HIS EXCELLENCY
THE MOST HON
SIR PATRICK ALLEN GOVERNOR GENERAL
