Credit unions provide $500,000 for online learning
MORE THAN $500,000 was spent recently by the Credit Union Movement through the Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League (JCCUL) as credit unions showed their support for online learning.
Recipients of computer tablets were all smiles at the Education Support Ceremony hosted by the Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League on Tuesday, November 3. Dasmine Kennedy, Region 1 director in the Ministry of Education, was also in attendance.
Seven of the recipients collected their computer tablets at the in-person event. They were Josset Leslie, principal of Calabar Primary and Junior High School, who collected 10 tablets for her grade six students. Also receiving three computer tablets was O’Neil Daley, father of Jaive and Raive Daley, two high school students and one infant school child. Tehillah Harris, student of Spanish Town High School, was among the recipients. Corneila Forrester, a mother of five living in Trench Town, also collected two tablets for her children.
The donation of educational support was also extended to Rohan Thompson, a student of Kingston Technical High School,
who received a laptop to aid with his online studies. The Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League has been sponsoring his education since he began high school in 2018.
After the handover ceremony, Dasmine Kennedy expressed her gratitude to the Credit Unions of Jamaica by acknowledging the positive impact of the donations on the recipients as they explore the benefits of
online learning. She stated that the devices would help them discover teaching aids from around the world that would greatly improve their understanding of different subject materials.
The Credit Union Movement was answering the call from the Ministry of Education for corporate Jamaica to support its Tablet in Schools project.
