Astute businessman who served well

- BISHOP CONRAD PITKIN Custos Rotulorum of St James

ON BEHALF of the justices of the peace and the other citizens of St James, I express sincere condolences to Ralph Smith’s widow, Joy, his children and members of the Smith family.

As we celebrate the life of Mr Ralph Smith, who gave so much during his 85 years of life, we reflect on the imprint he has left on the hearts of his children and many others.

This will not be the end of his life story, because the memory of his life and the influence of his life will remain with us.

The public outpouring of sympathy, grief and tributes of his passing is a testimony that we have all been touched by his life. Therefore, we can say Jamaica has lost another patriot.

Reminiscing on his life, this giant of a man made himself into an astute businessman who served his country well at all times and carried out his duties with dignity and pride.

We will never forget his invaluable contribution to our nation. Words such as honesty, humility, generosity, concern for others, love of family, friends, community and his country are only a few of the strong attributes of this gracious gentleman.

He served as justice of the peace (JP) for many years, during which he displayed a high standard of professionalism and ethical conduct. In his early years as a JP, he served as a lay magistrate in the Petty Sessions Court.

From all the accolades bestowed upon him, one can see that he was someone who gave unselfishly of his time and energy. His legacy will outlive him and this legacy will continue to influence and inspire many persons for years to come.

To the family members, I pray that God will comfort you all. I pray that the love of all those around you will provide some comfort and support during this period of loss.
