Man accused of killing son to know bail fate Friday

THE ST Andrew businessman Delton Knight, who allegedly shot and killed his son at their business place on the Gordon Town main road earlier this month, will know on Friday if he will be offered bail in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court.

The 64-year-old is charged with the April 12 murder of his 38-year old son, Ruel. The accused is also facing charges of illegal possession of firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

When Knight made his first appearance in the Gun Court section of the parish court on Wednesday, attorneys-at-law Peter Champagnie, QC, and Pierre Rogers made an application for bail before Parish Judge Maxine Dennis-McPherson.

However, after the application, the judge informed the lawyers that she would be reserving her decision until Friday and remanded the accused.

According to police reports, about 9:45 on the morning of the incident, an argument developed between the elder Knight, who is a licensed firearm holder, and his son. The father brandished a firearm and fired shots, hitting Ruel in the chest.

The accused then left the scene. The injured man was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

It is believed that the dispute started after the accused kicked a crate of liquor, which hit a customer, and his son asked him to apologise, and he got upset.

Since the shooting incident, a closed-circuit television video of the alleged shooting has surfaced showing a man, who appears to be the accused, firing a gun at a person believed to be the now-deceased son.

The video also shows the man kicking the injured man in the head as he lay on the ground before jumping into a vehicle and speeding out of the business complex after persons dragged the injured man out of the vehicle’s way.
