OUT OF THIS UNIVERSE

Miqueal-Symone’s wardrobe is ...

- Stephanie Lyew Sunday Gleaner Writer

Fashion is one of the Miss Universe Jamaica Miqueal-Symone Williams’ favourite things, and the wardrobe put together for her ‘Journey to the Crown’ could possibly have her singing to the tune of Julie Andrews as Maria in The Sound of Music: “Colourful pieces for interview sessions, cocktail dresses to interchange between events. To dress rehearsal or dinner with the other queens, these are a few of my favourite things.”

So what’s in Williams’ wardrobe. A lot of colour for starters. “Miqueal’s wardrobe was designed to make her stand out positively, create fashion moments any time she stepped out at Miss Universe and to be regarded as this year’s fashion icon delegate. We were very careful in selecting each look, accessorising it down to the shoes and jewellery and made a lookbook that she took with her,” said pageant director Mark McDermoth.

He added, “It was mostly colourful, and all the colours were chosen primarily to make her stand out. Even where she wears solid black or solid white pieces, we took care to add elements to ensure that they

not ordinary pieces and would create a lasting impact whenever she wore them.”

Interestingly, each year at Miss Universe, the lines have got blurred as to what constitutes cocktail, evening, and interview. It is not uncommon to see delegates wearing full-fledged evening gowns to the interview, he said. “This year, for example, delegates were seen in sequinned outfits at breakfast. The bottom line is that they tend to lean more towards being fully dressed up than not,” McDermoth said. He said this year, with the short length of time the delegates were in residence, “we knew everyone would be looking for any opportunity to dress up”.
