Two women to answer charges for breaching Trademark law

WESTERN BUREAU: TWO WOMEN have been arrested and charged by the Hanover police following the conclusion of investigations into a recent operation in which millions of dollars worth of counterfeit and ‘uncustomed goods’were seized at a house and a business place in Lucea.

The two women, who were arrested on June 26, were identified as SandraYoung and Cordia Allen. They are charged with breaches of the Trademark Act and the Customs Act.

According to Superintendent Sharon Beeput, the police commander for Hanover, a special operation was carried out by the police’s Proactive Investigation Unit (PIU) at a house and shop at Crissys Lane in the parish capital Lucea, where the items were discovered and seized and the two women arrested.

“The items that were seized include 4,802 cartons cigarettes, 286 bottles of liquor made up of JB, Campari and White Rum brands, J $1.3 million and US $203,” explained Bee put.

The senior cop, who made the initial revelation while delivering her report at Thursday’s monthly meeting of the Hanover Municipal Corporation (HMC), subsequently provided additional information in an interview with The Gleaner, in which she explained that the women were slated to appear in the Hanover Parish Court on July 27 to answer to the charges.

Beeput said that within recent weeks, the PIU has been making major inroads in tackling lawlessness in the western parish. She revealed that over the last month two firearms were seized in operations carried by the unit in Providence, Lucea, and Thompson Hill in Ramble.

Commenting on the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s efforts to increase its complement, Beeput told The Gleaner that the parish would be hosting a recruitment drive on August, 26 at the Rusea’s High School auditorium.

“We are trying to get as many persons as possible, ages 17 to 30 years old. I am appealing to all the councillors and all the persons who are present here, to assist us to get out these young people so we can get a good turnout,” she told the HMC meeting.

She also pointed out that the academic requirement for recruitment is four CXC subjects inclusive of English language. She also stated that other methods of advertisement would be done in the upcoming weeks.
