Arnett grab first JPL win
ARNETT GARDENS head coach Alex Thomas says his team will look to build on their first Jamaica Premier League (JPL) win, a 2-1 result over Humble Lion at the Stadium East yesterday.
Goals from Jonoy Cunningham (14th) and Renaldo Cephas (75th) gave the Junglists the win.
However, after losing their opening game to rivals Tivoli last week, Thomas said the three points are welcome and he wants his young players to take confidence from the performance going into their next game.
“After coming off a loss against Tivoli, we went back to the drawing board,” Thomas said. “We did our homework, and as you can see, we created numerous chances and came out on top 2-1.
“We are one game behind (other teams) but this three points have set us up and we have to build on it. That will be our objective for the next game.
“I am totally pleased to get off the mark and once we can put the first foot forward, we can continue to move forward.”
Arnett were the better team over the 90 minutes and had the far better chances. They started brightly and four minutes into the contest it took goalkeeper Mikhail Harrison to deny Cephas, who had the goal at his mercy but he could not beat the Humble Lion custodian from five yards.
Humble Lion then went straight up field and Lorenzo Lewin slipped a pass to former Arnett Gardens man Vishnul Harris, who made no mistake.
Arnett equalised soon after through a thumping header from Cunningham from a corner.
They continued to create great chances to go ahead but were let down by poor finishing.
Arnett’s dominance continued after the break but wasted numerous chances created. However, Cephas eventually made one of the opportunities count 15 minutes from time when he stabbed home from seven yards past Harrison in goal.
Substitute Rohan Richards had a glorious chance to get a point for Humble Lion at the end but he lifted his effort over the bar with Arnett goalkeeper Chadeem Rodrigues at his mercy.
The win took Arnett Gardens to eighth place on three points from two starts, while Humble Lion are still without a point and eleventh after three matches.
