Floyd Green is no ‘man guinep’

-

THE EDITOR, Madam:

IT IS guinep season in my area, and the thought came to mind: Many politicians are like guinep trees.

All guinep trees bloom, but the male (man guinep) tree does not bear fruits.

Politicians bloom - giving ‘bags of talk’; making promises they know they can’t keep or have no intention of keeping, hoping that promises made will go the way of the usual, nine-day wonder.

With that said, I want to highlight one politician who stands out – ‘bears fruit’.

Floyd Green, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, is one minister who does not earn the designation/label of a ‘man guinep tree’. His words means something (bears fruit), he follows through on promises he has made. For examples, on one of his many ‘get acquainted’ tours as minister, he promised fishermen in South Clarendon, who are having issues with space on the fishing beach, to expand the waterway by removing the silt deposit.

To date, fishermen have more space for their boats, even though much more work is needed to be done.

He promised to give some – COVID-19 relief to fishermen, and he did. He has also promised to roll out an enforcement team of fish wardens’ (my designation) to monitor the fishing beaches to combat infractions. That, we are told, is in the pipeline.

I hope he will see it fit to set up a ‘fish warden’ enforcement team on every beach in Jamaica. As I see it , Mr Green bears fruit, he is one hard-working minister who keeps promises he has made. He is no man guinep.
