Why do Sunday worshippers need a pass?

-

THE EDITOR, MADAM:

A FEW days ago, I received an authorisation for attendance at a place of worship. The one-page document purports to identify me as the person attending my place of worship on the date specified. It was not transferable. So, if for some reason I was unable to make it, I could not simply say to someone else, “See, here is a pass for worship service on Sunday but I am not feeling well; would you like to go?” And to top it off, such a transfer would be impossible, since I am required to take along my ID.

I am anxious to hear from our church leaders, just when churchgoers in Jamaica have been so devalued, or devalued themselves, that they cannot be identified without a pass and an ID? At the age of 81, I can readily recall 75 years ago and to the present, when churchgoers could not be mistaken f or persons heading to a beach party. We were, and most of us are to this day, dressed in our

Sunday best!

For the records, I still take along my Bible to church, and I do not dress as though I am out on a social visit. I support and encourage others to follow the protocols and other government guidelines. But I am not here advocating what anyone else should do.

I am simply stating that if persons are prepared to lie about going to church when they are not, then maybe we should not prevent them from doing so. They could only be a mere handful ;and wouldn’t their actions speak louder than their lies?

For me, I will continue to visit my church on a Sunday whenever feasible. But can someone explain to me why a ‘pass’ and an ID are required to confirm that I am on my way to or from church? Pray the authorities may continue the search for solutions to help us out of this most dreadful crisis. A pass and an ID for Sunday worshippers do not appear to qualify.
