More TROUBLE for Nesta

Carter set for second anti-doping hearing

WEEKS AFTER revealing that he was retiring due to a worsening medical condition, Jamaican sprinter Nesta Carter has again found himself in trouble with anti-doping officials after testing positive for a banned substance.

He is expected to explain the circumstances behind the failed test at an anti-doping disciplinary hearing scheduled for Thursday, October 14.

This comes after Carter, 35, shared through a press release in August that he was hanging up his spikes due to a private medical situation.

Carter said in the release that the condition was becoming progressively worse and that it had prevented him from training and competing since March this year. He also said that medication which he would be required to take for the condition is in violation of antidoping rules.

The matter will be heard in front of the three-member Independent Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel, which is chaired by Kent Gammon.

Gammon confirmed to the RJRGLEANER Group that the matter had been referred to his panel.

ANTI-DOPING

“We have a matter with Nesta Carter… We do have a disciplinary hearing that was referred to me by JADCO,” said Gammon, who also confirmed that the anti-doping rule violation pertained to a positive test.

The case will be heard virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic. The other members of the panel are Dr Japheth Ford and Mr Heron Dale.

Carter has a personal best of 9.78 seconds for the 100m, which ranks as the ninth fastest time ever and fourth best for a Jamaican sprinter.

The sprinter will be represented by attorney Stuart Stimpson.

This is the second anti-doping violation for Carter, a relay Olympic gold medal winner and the 2013 World Championships 100m bronze medallist.

It comes three years after he lost his appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in a matter, which saw the International

Olympic Committee strip him and Jamaica’s men’s 4x100m relay team of the gold medal they won at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

This after Carter retroactively tested positive for the banned substance Methylhexaneamine, from samples collected and stored from the 2008 Olympic Games.

Carter last competed on March 20 at the Velocity Fest #8 meet at the National Stadium, clocking 10.51 seconds in the 100m.

He has a personal best of 9.78 seconds in the 100m, which was done in Rieti, Italy, in August 2010.

This time makes him the fourth fastest Jamaican in history with only Usain Bolt (9.58), Yohan Blake (9.69) and Asafa Powell (9.72) going faster.
