Forbes, Sommerville to contest Netball Jamaica election

FORMER SUNSHINE Girls captain Simone Forbes will square off with Garth Sommerville for the post of first vice-president at Netball Jamaica’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) tomorrow.

Forbes, who has been a director at NJ for three years, said she decided to run because she wants to help with netball’s development.

“I believe that I have something to continue contributing to Netball Jamaica,” she said.

“I don’t think that I have done all I said that I wanted to do or that I can do, and it is only fitting that I put myself back up for nomination.

“The first vice-president position is vacant, so I decided that I will put my hat in the ring for that position,” Forbes said.

The first vice-president post has been vacant since February 2020 after Tricia Robinson became NJ’s president.

Forbes said that she will encourage anyone who thinks that they can make a valuable contribution to the sport to offer themselves for a position on the board.

“I would encourage anybody and everybody who are members of the association or the company, if they think they are capable and have something to contribute, then you should run for a position,” she said. “The members are the ones who are going to decide who they believe should be the first vice-president and even if I think I should get the position, it is really not up to me.

“I have a 50 per cent chance of winning and so does Mr Sommerville, so I will just leave it at that.”

The Gleaner reached out to Sommerville for a comment, but calls to him went unanswered.
