Continuing to enrich lives in the community
THE BAPTIST Church in Jamaica is known for the pivotal role it played in the evolution of Jamaica’s history and development, especially in the struggle for the abolition of slavery and the creation of free villages for the newly emancipated people.
Since 1783 when the Baptist denomination was introduced in Jamaica, the Church has had an illustrious history of Christian witness. In its characteristically vibrant tradition, the Exchange Baptist Church, which was established in 1896, has been steadfast in executing its mission to generations of individuals and families in the community and its environs.
Celebrating 125 years is a great accomplishment. It is a test of endurance and a testimony of the never-ending blessing of God. The anniversary theme, ‘125 years: A legacy gratefully received, to be faithfully passed on’, is one that aptly sums up your past, present and future action.
It acknowledges the pioneers who started this church, the families who grew and maintained it, and the pastors who spiritually guided the congregation. It also speaks to the cognisance this generation should have of their forerunners and their responsibility to continue espousing stewardship that will motivate others to continue in their zeal for God.
The church is a bridge that connects faith-based communities as they respond to the temporal needs of the people. The role of the church in helping to shape family values, establish decency and order, rebuild foundations and mend the fraying moral fabric of our nation can never be underestimated.
Through its social activities, including health fairs, back-toschool treats, evangelistic outreach, street feeding and homework programmes, the Exchange Baptist Church continues to enrich the lives of many families and young people in the community.
There is nothing you can do to quantitatively reciprocate what has been done in the life of your church but to offer sacrifices of praise and thanksgiving. I trust God’s blessings will be yours as you celebrate His goodness for the past 125 years and continue to build on the rich legacy and strong foundation which you have inherited.
Happy anniversary!
HIS EXCELLENCY THE MOST HON SIR PATRICK ALLEN, ON, GCMG, CD, KSTJ Governor General
