We owe a great debt of gratitude to S&T
OVER THE past year and a half, our global society has been reminded of the critical roles of science and technology as we have navigated a global pandemic. Scientists and technologists have answered the call to save the world from this deadly threat, and delivered a range of vaccines within a year, which is an unprecedented feat.
Therefore, this November’s celebration of the contributions of scientists and technologists under the theme, ‘Science & Technology, the Heartbeat of National Development’, is particularly poignant and meaningful, given the current pandemic’s most salient reminder of the great debt of gratitude owed by mankind to science and technology.
I believe strongly in the roles that science and technology must play in our nation’s development. For example, access to broadband internet has become so fundamental to the achievement of a range of basic human aspirations that it must be treated as the right of all members of society. Whether it be the pursuit of free and available academic studies, learning a variety of skills, research and the gaining of knowledge, connecting with the global community, or networking with other professionals or students, broadband internet opens vistas of opportunity that should not be denied our people.
Jamaica has benefited from the heritage forged by a number of famous scientists and successful innovators, including pioneers like professors Louis Grant, Manley West and Albert Lockhart, and Dr Thomas P. Lecky. Their contributions have transcended our borders and been recognised around the world.
I wish to see a future in which Jamaicans continue to expand our horizons beyond the physical boundaries of our island home, and design solutions and uncover truths that have a global impact. I believe our youth possess the depth of talent to achieve, and the State must support innovation and research so as to enable these talents to be actualised.
To our scientists and technologists, I salute you. I thank you for your contributions and I wish you success in all future endeavours!
Happy S&T Month 2021!
