The careful execution of science will get us through

-

AS WE recognise National Science and Technology Month, its theme – the ‘Heartbeat of National Development’ – is no idle boast or hyperbolic slogan. Pretty much every Jamaican person and company literally relies on the products of science and technology to carry out their daily lives and run their businesses. We take these for granted, but we should always remember to appreciate, not just these products, but also the people and systems behind them that make these happen.

The many men and women who drive science innovation and policy, who conduct research, and who consume its products are all part of a vast ecosystem, entwined with wider society, the environment and the economy. Originally intended to drive awareness, this special month is part of the popularisation of the science mandate of the Scientific Research Council. But this is no longer enough. We now need to build on this awareness as we move deeper into the era of climate change, even as we navigate the current challenges of a pandemic. It will be the careful execution of science, not talk, that will get us through these. We should not fear science, nor any of the other STEM subjects. Scientists are humans too, and us Jamaican scientists are just the same as you who are reading this special publication. And we will share the fate of all Jamaicans if we do not rise to the challenges we all face as a society. We will continue to do our part, and invite you to join us on this journey.

DR PARRIS LYEW-AYEE JR

Chairman of the Board Scientific Research Council
