Frome knock Rusea’s off Zone B perch
ELEVEN-TIME CHAMPIONS Rusea’s High School suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Frome Technical High School in their top of Zone B clash in the InterSecondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) dacosta Cup football competition at the Collin Miller Sports Complex in Lucea yesterday.
Rusea’s found it tough to get going in the game as Frome seemed to be getting things right tactically. Things got even more difficult for the hosts in the 37th minute when Damar Sailsman headed the ball into his own net from a corner kick to leave them trailing at the break.
Frome came out of the interval and would pick up where they left off, doubling the lead in the 59th minute through their top marksman Stevaughn Spence. Spence has now taken his tally to seven goals.
The deflated Russians were certainly not up for the fight and would concede a penalty in the third minute of stoppage time that Javel Clark converted.
The result left Frome top of Zone B with a superior goal difference. They are level on points with Rusea’s but have played a game less.
Cleighton Stephens, coach of Frome, said his team’s performance was “excellent”.
“It was an excellent performance. I know they were tense coming into the game, even though we knew we were the better team. They knew in a rivalry game anything could happen because last year they beat us and we were the better team.
“Yes, beating them on their home ground is always good. Also, because of the weather, we could not train so that made it even better. Our plan this season is to get a good seeding, so we try not to concede and win all our games,” said Stephens.
BAD GAME
Dwayne Ambusley, coach of Rusea’s, said his team did not turn up in what was a disappointing performance but that it was just one bad game they would bounce back from.
“I think it was more the indiscipline of my team today. Frome played a very good game. I must commend them for that but, on the other hand, my team did not turn up and was disappointing in every aspect,” Ambusley said.
“However, such is football. We have to go back to the training ground and get things right. A result like this was not expected, especially based on how we have been playing. However, things like this happen, so it is up to us (coaches) to rally around the boys and get things right,” he added.
