‘I have no offer in front of me’
Chung unsure about taking up JFF general secretary post
CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT Dennis Chung, the man being eyed to succeed Dalton Wint as general secretary of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), is unsure whether he would be willing to sit in the hot seat.
President of the JFF, Michael Ricketts, told The Gleaner at the weekend that a new general secretary is imminent and Chung, the current chairman of the JFF’S Finance Committee, was selected by a small leadership core of the JFF two days ago to succeed Wint, who had indicated in June that he would resign providing certain conditions were met.
The Gleaner spoke to Chung yesterday and when asked asked about the possibility of him taking on the role of general secretary, said he had no offer in front of him.
“I have no offer in front of me so that is all I can say on that matter,” said the man who is a lover of the sport and a keen cyclist.
Questioned further if he would consider taking up the position if the offer was made, Chung indicated that he was unsure. “I don’t know.
“I would have to see what happens,” said Chung.
If he accepts, the JFF will have to wait at least a month before Chung, also a highly regarded financial commentator and social commentator, steps away from his position as chief financial officer (CFO) at Supreme Ventures. Chung’s resignation becomes effective October 31, 2022. He confirmed that he will be leaving Supreme Ventures at the end of the month.
Ricketts, who was quoted in The Sunday Gleaner saying: “There will be a new general secretary in a few days, but I can’t speak on that publicly yet,” could not be reached for a comment yesterday as his phone went unanswered.
According to Chung, football needs help and in his capacity as chairman of the Finance Committee, he has led the process of sorting outstanding taxes, liquidated a significant part of the body’s debt and has even helped unearth a small surplus.
“We know football needs help and I have been helping as chairman of the Finance Committee. We have made significant strides but there are still some challenges,” said Chung, who has held leadership positions at the Jamaica Money Market Brokers and the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica.
Currently, Chung serves as the chairman of the National Solid Waste Management Agency, as board director and chairman of GK Capital’s Audit Committee and is a past president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Jamaica. He is also a justice of the peace and has authored two books.
