ISSA T20: Defending champions facing elimination
IT IS do-or-die for Wolmer’s Boys’ School in their final Super 8 ISSA/TVJ T20 fixture today at 9:30 a.m. against May Day High at the Ultimate Oval in St Ann.
The Jerrain Williams-coached Wolmer’s Boys’ are currently in third place in Zone ‘B’ on five points, and they face elimination from the competition if they fail to beat leaders May Day High who have six points from their two games so far.
Following their opening match loss to Manchester High, who are in second place also on six points, Wolmer’s Boys’ resurrected their campaign with a comprehensive win against St. George’s College last Saturday, and they know all too well that they will have to come up with another impressive performance if they are to make it into the final four.
“There is pressure in every game, but it’s all about how we handle that pressure. The focus is on winning and the morale is pretty high from the St George’s win, but we are not playing St.
George’s, so we have to bring our ‘A’game,”said Wolmer’s captain Justin Beckford.
Beckford was among the runs in their last game against St George’s where he top-scored with 82 in their total of 200 for four in their allotted 20 overs. Opener Corey Hinds also made a half-century in that fixture, and he, along with wicket-keeper Jose Northover and Jordan Johnson, is expected to provide the bulk of the runs against a very good May Day bowling line-up which includes Reon Edwards, Nashane Meade, Christopher Lewis and Javed Williams.
“We know a couple of their players and we know that their strength is their bowling, but we back our team to put up a good total and come out victorious,” added Beckford.
In the other fixture of the doubleheader, Zone ‘A’ leaders St Elizabeth Technical High School square off with second place Tacky High at 1:30 p.m.
Kensington Cricket Club will be the venue for the other fixtures which will see secondplace Manchester High in Zone ‘B’ taking on fourth-place St George’s College at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Zone ‘A’ fixture between thirdplace Excelsior High and fourth-place St Jago High.
