Bastan Quan finds a ‘New Gear’

-

DANCEHALL ARTISTE Bastan Quan is banking on the release of a new song titled New Gear.

“This song is giving inspiration to the youths by providing motivation and upliftment for them. The track starts off with an apology for the hurt we cause people and others, because by acknowledging their past mistakes, they will realise we are all human and that will give youths the energy to pursue their future dreams,” the artiste, whose real name is Shaquane Walker, said.

He will be releasing a video for New Gear on May 19.

The entertainer, who released a five-track EP called Fight in January, explained how he came up with the moniker, Bastan Quan.

“The word ‘Bastan’ comes from the word ‘bastillion’, which means unity and strength while Quan comes from my Christian name, Shaquane, and the people dem tek on to the name,” he said.

He grew up in Seaview Gardens, and attended Tivoli Garden High School. He was inspired by the knowledge that the biggest stars in dancehall, including the likes of Shabba Ranks, Bounty Killer and Dexta Daps, emerged from his native community of Seaview Gardens.

“The love I have for music is great and my Seaview Gardens community has a great musical history where some great dancehall legends come from, so I was inspired to do music,” Bastan Quan said.

He recently inked a deal with Visually Sound Records and has also been producing songs under his own label, Bastillion Records.

“Right now, the thing has grown from strength to strength and we’re moving to a new gear,” he said.
