We are committed to gender equality
ON THIS occasion of the International Day of Women in Maritime, Jamaica celebrates not only the individual achievements of women in the maritime industry, but also the power of collective action and the strength of networks that promote gender equality. This year’s theme, ‘Mobilizing Networks for Gender Equality’, inspires the crucial need to unite and mobilise networks to create a more inclusive and equitable maritime sector.
By joining forces, we can address common challenges, advocate for gender equality, and drive positive change within the industry. The International Maritime Organization’s establishment of Women in Maritime Associations is one example of such networks.
Today, we recognise and honour the invaluable contributions that women make to the maritime industry. Throughout history, women have been integral to maritime activities, yet their achievements and roles have been often overlooked and underrepresented. Jamaica and the world strive to change that narrative by recognising the exceptional women who navigate the seas, command vessels, conduct research, and contribute to various maritime sectors. The presence and leadership in traditionally male-dominated fields inspire and empower others, demonstrating that gender should never l imit one’s aspirations or potential.
The Ministry of Transport and Mining reaffirms our commitment to achieving gender equality and promoting diversity within the maritime industry. To the women in maritime, we extend our appreciation for your contributions and remarkable achievements, and unwavering dedication. We also are thankful to you, as we create a future where every woman in maritime is recognised, celebrated and given equal opportunities to thrive. Let us share our stories, and inspire the next generation of women in maritime.
Happy International Day of Women in Maritime!
