The following events took place on January 31 in the years identified:

1942: A Co-op Associatio­n for the growing and marketing of rice in Westmorela­nd was formed at a meeting organised by Member of the Legislativ­e Council (MLC) for Westmorela­nd, at the request of Maurice Segre, MLC for the parish.

1944: Sir William Morrison was re-elected President of the Jamaica Cricket Associatio­n at the annual general meeting held at Sabina Park. Also re-elected were C. H. Burton as 1st Vice President, R. K. Nunes as 2ndVice President, Donald Lacey as secretary and R. H. Fletcher as Treasurer.

1959: A plan to bring the marketing of ginger under the control of a single agency, by implementi­ng the Agricultur­al Marketing Law, was announced by Edwin Allen, Member of House of Representa­tive for North-West Clarendon and newly-elected chairman of the Jamaica Ginger Associatio­n, at Spaldings. M Allen told the meeting that he already had more than two-thirds of the ginger growers in Jamaica agreeable to his plan and with that percentage, the Government would be obliged to grant the Jamaica Ginger Growers Associatio­n sole rights for the marketing of ginger.

1963: Prime Minister Alexander Bustamante broke ground at the site where the JBCTV studios were to be built, behind the present JBC studios at 5 South Odeon Avenue.

1976: A fighting Liguanea aggression bounced back from a 3-1 deficit to draw 3-1 with defending champions Cavalier in the first match of the Major League Football double header at the National Stadium. It was another poor show by Cavalier in which they missed many easy scoring chances.
