Edwin Allen, KC shine at Youngster Goldsmith

TONYANN BECKFORD of Edwin Allen High and Kingston College’s Antonio Forbes produced top performanc­es as their schools dominated proceeding­s at last Saturday’s Youngster Goldsmith Classics at the National Stadium.

Beckford, the co-captain of the Edwin Allen team, led a one-two finish for her team after racing to an impressive season’s best 58.52 seconds to win the 400m hurdles open for girls. Natasha Fox was second in a season’s best 59.00, as Hydel High’s Aaliyah Mullings was third overall in 1:00.89.

Forbes scored a big win in the Class One 400m hurdles clocking a season’s best 51.81. Excelsior High’s Richard Hall was second overall in a personal-best 52.20, while Calabar High’s Shadane Smith was third overall in 52.66.

Edwin Allen also dominated the girls’ 100m, winning in all classes with clean sweeps of the top three spots in Classes Two and Three and a one-two finish in Class Four.

The outstandin­g Theianna~Lee Terrelonge won the Class Two 100 min 11.61 seconds, as teammates Shanique Cassanova (12.07) and Reneika Edwards (12.09) were second and third overall, respective­ly.

Dominican Kerelle Etienne (11.84) won in Class Three ahead of Arihanna Brown, second in a personal-best 12.36, while Yesheika Sinclair was third in 12.40.

Tashana Godfrey raced to a personal-best 12.70 to win Class Four, ahead of teammate Makalia McDonald in a personal-best 12.74. Aaliyah Rose of Convent of Mercy, Alpha was third overall in a personal-best 12.85. Trezeguet Taylor, who is from England, closed out the Edwin Allen wins after taking Class One in 11.84, ahead of Titchfield High’s Chevannae Grant, who was second in a personal-best 12.04. Taylor’s teammate Jounee Armstrong was third in 12.13.

There were two other big wins for Edwin Allen on the track. Kellyann Carr won the Class Two 400m in a season’s best 55.03 ahead of Breanna Brown of Excelsior, 56.14, and Natassia Fletcher of Hydel, 56.32.

Edwin Allen’s Shushana Johnson won the 2000m steeplecha­se open in a personal-best 7:12.40. She surprised Champs winner Kaydeen Johnson of Hydel, who was second in 7:16.16. Taeifa Gowe was third in 7: 18.81.

Hydel picked up two wins in the 400m with the in-form Abigail Campbell taking Class One in 53.95 ahead of teammate Aaliyah Baker, 55.02, with St Catherine High’s Kittania Headley third in 55.71. Sashana Johnson won Class Three in 56.84, ahead of Tresha Lee Sutherland of Clarendon College, 57.21, with Kevanee Bourne of Port Antonio High third in 57.33.

In sprint hurdles, Arrian Nelson of Hydel won the Class Four 70m in a personal-best 10.58. Edwin Allen’s Godfrey was second in a personal-best 10.95.

Regena Pryce of Alpha won the Class Two 80m hurdles in a personal-best 11.37 ahead of Akelah Bell of Wolmer’s Girls’, who did a personal-best 11.41. Briana Campbell of St Jago won the Class Two 100m hurdles in a personalbe­st 13.22, ahead of Wolmer’s Tiana Marshall,13.39. St Elizabeth Technical’s Habibah Harris won the Class One event in 13.35, a time which equalled her personal best. St Catherine High’s Asharria Ulett was second in 13.97.

After being in first gear all season, Kingston College athletes stepped up a notch. Taj Oneil Gordon (14.28) and Jonathon Clarke (14.34) produced personalbe­st times for first and second, respective­ly, in the Class Two 110m hurdles.

Amal Glasgow clocked 47.95 to win the Class One 400m; Brian Kiprop won the 2000m steeplecha­se open on a canter in six minutes 00.47; Nyron Wade won the Class Two 100m in 10.92; high jumper Steseen Hurd topped Class Three with a personal-best 1.90m; and Zachary Merchant won the Class Two triple jump with a personal-best 13.67m.

Calabar’s Nickecoy Bramwell continued his good form in the 400m, after winning the Class Two event in 49.75, with St Catherine’s Ian Baker second in 49.93. Calabar also scored a win in high jump Class One with Kijaun Williams clearing 1.90m for a personal best.

Excelsior High’s Demarco Bennett also scored a big win on the day when he captured the Class Two 400m hurdles in 53.23 ahead of Calabar’s Robert Miller, who was second in a personal-best 53.68.
