Three-time winner hopes to repeat at Hague 2024
FIFTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD ADRIAN Fuller has been a farmer for more than half the number of years he has been alive. The Kinloss native, a mason by trade, got into farming during lean times in the construction industry.
“I started farming to supplement my income. It all started with growing some callaloo and rearing two goats, and before long I included carrots and pigs,” Fuller informed.
The father of two has seen growth in his farming.
“Today I have cows, goats, sheep, along with a variety of vegetables. My main problem, apart from the help I would welcome from the Ministry of Agriculture, is the thieves.” Having lost a few animals to theft, Fuller now resorts to taking his animals out in the morning and taking them home at nights. “You can’t trust the two-foot puss dem,” he said with a chuckle.
The Trelawny farmer said he has not missed the Hague Agricultural and Industrial Show for years.
“I have won prizes on three occasions. Two times with goats and once with my prize bull. I have the trophies proudly displayed at home,” he boasted.
Fuller is proud of his rain harvesting technique.
“You don’t use pumped water on my plants. I have built a catchment and harvest my own water. I use it to water all my crops and give water to my animals,” he disclosed.
He said that one of his children is involved with him on the farm.
“My son works at a hotel and will come if I ask him. My daughter is always here with me.”
Fuller, who still works as a mason when that work is available, said he would appreciate any help he could get from the Rural Agricultural Development Authority.
“I hear the minister talking about developing the small ruminants industry. I would love to receive one of the goats ... just give me a start and I will develop my stock,” he said.
In the meantime, Fuller is preparing to take one cow and two goats to Hague Show 2024.
