Outreach Ministry

-

THE OUTREACH Ministry is a primary responsibility of the church. We are cognisant of the fact that without a sustained, effective outreach, we cannot fulfil our purpose.

Over the years, the Church of Jesus Christ has implemented different types of outreach programmes and events to address the financial, social, emotional, physical and educational needs of community members.

The hosting of our annual community health fair was one such event, which was usually held in August. Community members had the opportunity to access health screenings and medical attention free of cost. Participating organisations included the Westmoreland Pubic Health Services, National Health Fund and CHASE Fund, partnering with us in providing health education and increasing the immunisation coverage of the community. Courts Optical provided eye screening, and the Cancer Society and the Diabetic Association of Jamaica provided Pap smears and diabetic screening, respectively.

Sandals Foundation also assisted with materials and equipment, and lunches for volunteers.

Pharmaceuticals, wheelchairs, walkers, commodes, garden supplies, food stuff and school supplies were distributed to community members.

Recognising the therapeutic value of music, a 30-member marching band was formed, directed by a professional bandmaster, to target the youth at risk in the community. This, again, was of no cost to the youth. There was evidence of behaviour change.

A sponsor-a-child programme was set up to assist underprivileged students, both in the Whitehouse community and two adjacent communities of Farm and Petersville. These students were outfitted with uniforms, books and lunch money. School dropouts were also assisted to re-enrol in the school system.

A Community Child Evangelism was also formed to bring the Gospel of Christ to the level and environment of children who may not have otherwise experienced God’s love.

Focus was mainly on developing social skills, preparing them to resolve conflicts amicably and approach life positively.

Some home-bound and elderly receive regular visits to ensure their needs are taken care of. Volunteers from the church ensure that some of the neediest receive at least one cooked meal each day. Provision is also made for them to enjoy a clean environment.

When situations arise, assistance to see health providers is also ensured.

Generally, continuous contributions of cash and kind are given in response to requests from community members to help defray funeral and medical expenses.

The church is committed to extend a helping hand as we share the good news of Christ.
