Edwin Allen set to shine in relays

- Raymond Graham/ Gleaner Writer

AFTER A dominant season so far in individual events on the track and in the field Edwin Allen High School’s girls will turn their attention to relay events at today’s Milo Western Relays at the G. C. Foster College of Physical Education.

Edwin Allen’s girls have dominated these relays over the years, and they will be hoping to send another strong message that they are ready to reclaim their female title at next month’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Championships after a surprise loss to Hydel High last year.

The outstanding Theianna-Lee Terrelonge has been on fire since the start of the year and she will spearhead their Class Two 4x100m relay team and it should be smooth sailing for them in this event. Led by Trezeguet Taylor in Class One, Kerelle Etienne in Class Three and Tashana Godfrey in Class Four it could be a clean sweep for the Michael Dyke-coached team in the sprint relays.

Their sternest tests will likely come in the 4x400m and 4x800m open relays as St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) and Holmwood Technical stand in their way in these events. At the STETHS Invitational meet two weeks ago, Edwin Allen were beaten by the home team in the 4x400m and they will want to prove that their win then was no fluke.

In past years Edwin Allen have also dominated the 4x800m, but could be upstaged this time around by Holmwood Technical who have a strong middledistance squad.

Kingston College (KC) have also done well at this meet in the past and the Leaford Grant-coached team which picked up their performances at the Youngster Goldsmith Classics last Saturday will be hoping for their usual good performances. Their main rivals Calabar High and Jamaica College will not be at the meet.

While KC look set to dominate in the lower classes they should be fully tested by Excelsior High in Class One 4x100m and 4x400m open.

Led by Richard Hall, Daniel Wright and Demarco Bennett, the David Riley-coached Excelsior were impressive at the Central Hurdles and Relays meet at today’s venue earlier this year and could upstage their more fancied rivals. STETHS should also do well in both the Class One 4x100m and 4x400m. Two other development meets are scheduled for today. The Camperdown Classics is on at the National Stadium while the King of the Ring throws meet will take place at Excelsior on Mountain View Avenue.

The Milo Western Relays will start at 10 a.m. with the 1500m open for girls while the other two meets will begin at 9 a.m.
