St George’s aim to move up at Champs

- Gregory Bryce/ Gleaner Writer

ST GEORGE’S College is not a name that is among t he top schools in the ISSA/ GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships (Champs) standings. Last year the school finished 13th in the boys’ standings with just 19 points.

However, track and field coach Kevin Pryce wants to change all of that as he says the school’s programme is alive and performing well.

Pryce said, however, that while the athletes are being trained to compete at their best, the main aim for the St George’s track and field programme is to work on the individual development of each athlete.

“Yes, the track programme is alive and well. We’re not here for the show, we’re here to develop young talent and young minds to make them better men. We’re just looking forward for the future, coming to the meets and being competitive,” Pryce said.

According the Pryce, the team is currently in a rebuilding process with the loss of several of their senior athletes. With Champs just over a month away, he has been impressed by the effort being shown by his athletes so far throughout the season, and he expects a strong showing particularly in Class Three.

According to the St George’s coach, the younger athletes will lead the way this season.

“The coaching staff at St George’s is on a rebuilding process with a young crop of guys that are very enthused and ready to go,” he said. “In Class Three, I’d say that’s our strongest area, especially in the sprints. We have been very competitive all season, so we’re looking forward to having strong performances in the Class Three 100m, 200m and also in the hurdles, along with the jumps.”

The North Street-based high school will be hoping to climb further up the standings this year, with an aim to improve on last year’s finish where they placed just outside the championships top 10.

“With every season, the whole plan is to improve on what we did the previous year. We finished 13th at Champs last year, and we plan to improve on that,” Pryce said.
