Simpson plans for final-year Champs medal

- Gregory Bryce Gleaner Writer

IMMACULATE HIGH School co-captain Mireya Simpson is aiming to end her ISSA/ GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships career with her first-ever medal.

The final-year athlete at Immaculate will be hoping to claim her first-ever Champs medal in the Class One girls’ long and high jumps.

“I hope to make the finals in all my events,” she said.

“Hopefully I can medal. This is my final year and I haven’t got a Champs medal yet, so hopefully I will.”

Simpson is confident in her medal hopes as she has been enjoying a good season so far.

Simpson won the long and high jump at the Corporate Area Championships and will hope to continue her form leading up to Champs.

“I think overall, I’m a better performer now and a better person. I’m not going to lie, I’ve been putting in a lot of work and I’ve seen some results even though it doesn’t end here.

“It’s good to see that what I’ve been doing has been showing up at the track meets and has been showing up at the Corporate Area Championships, so I’m really excited to see what’s next.” Simpson, along with her co-captain Cerae Mahabeer, will lead the lines for Immaculate.

She said she is under no pressure as one of the team’s leaders, confident in the quality around her.

“I wouldn’t say there’s pressure but a good example has to be set. Yes, you’re supposed to lead from the front knowing that the younger girls are looking up to you as the captain, so you know you have to put your best foot forward.

“It’s really good to see all the hard work the girls have been putting in and the efforts that the coaches are putting in, and with the team that we have, I think it’s going to be a good outcome.”

Immaculate finished seventh last year on the girls’ standings with 94 points, and the team will be looking to climb further up the table this year.
