No burnt bridges between ‘Rambo’ and Treasure Beach

- Gregory Bryce/Staff Reporter

TREASURE BEACH FC chairman Jason Henzell has cleared the air on the resignation of head coach Omar ‘ Rambo’ Wedderburn. Henzell says Wedderburn is still in good standing with the club despite his sudden resignation.

After their loss to fellow relegation rivals Lime Hall Academy, Wedderburn announced in his post-match interview that he would be stepping away from his position as head coach of Treasure Beach FC.

Henzell explained that Wedderburn had communicated with the club leading up to the match.

According the Henzell, they were not planning to sack Wedderburn despite the team’s poor return in the Wray & Nephew-sponsored Jamaica Premier League (JPL). However, with Wedderburn’s decision, the club had no choice but to part ways with him.

“I was extremely supportive of coach Rambo from day one,” he said. “Coach Rambo and I have had a very close relationship over the years so the partnership is one I hold close to my heart. I basically gave him all the players that he requested along with the players that would have turned up for the trials.

“But for some reason, and it’s hard to explain, it’s really hard to explain why Rambo was not able to get the results in those games. So he unfortunately resigned and I respect him for that and we maintain a good relationship.”

Treasure Beach and Wedderburn both endured a rough welcome to the JPL, with the coach only recording two wins in his 17 games in charge, which included a 12-game losing streak for the St Elizabeth-based team.

Henzell feels the results were not a true reflection of Wedderburn’s capabilities as a coach and said he has not closed the door on working with him in the future.

“It’s hard to explain because I know in my heart that Rambo is an excellent coach and I know that he genuinely gave it everything he had. It’s one of those things because Rambo himself just couldn’t believe (what was happening) as in his entire coaching career, he has never lost 12 matches in a row. So he did what he thought was the honourable thing and I had no option but to accept his resignation and wish him well, and I know I’ll work with him in the future in another capacity.”

Treasure Beach are inside the relegation zone, 13th spot, in the JPL standings, eight points behind Molynes United in 12th and will be hoping they can secure their survival with only seven matches left to play in the season.
