Defiant Brathwaite puts Pride in control

- Lennox Aldred/Gleaner Writer

WEST INDIES Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite showed his real class as he stroked a polished unbeaten century to give the Barbados Pride the upper hand against the Jamaica Scorpions on day two of their West Indies Championship match at Sabina Park.

Brathwaite took some time to get going, but the right-hander used up 290 balls and hit 13 fours to remain unbeaten on 129 as the Pride closed day two on 315 for six, a lead of 46 runs with four wickets in hand.

After losing opener Zachary McKaskie for 15 and Shayne Mosley for 14 at 36 for two, Brathwaite prodded and probed his way in sharing in a 55-run third-wicket stand with Jonathan Drakes, who made 31 before he was bowled by Peat Salmon.

Brathwaite then found another useful partner in the in-form Kevin Wickham as the pair batted the Pride to safety by putting on 120 runs for the fourth wicket, which took the visitors within 58 runs of first-innings honours.

The Scorpions would, however, get the breakthrough in the 69th over, when Wickham on 63 was run out after a mix-up with Brathwaite.

That wicket did not slow the Pride’s progress as they surpassed the Scorpions’ first-innings score of 269, thanks to a 63-run fifth-wicket stand between Brathwaite and Roshon Primus, who made 22.

The Pride would lose one more wicket in Akeem Jordan for 13, but Brathwaite and former Test wicket-keeper Shane Dowrich saw it through to the end without further loss.

Dowrich was left unbeaten on 19 despite two wickets for Derval Green and a wicket each for Ojay Shields and Salmon.
