Hydel’s Fletcher the pick of Carifta second day

DAY TWO of the Carifta Trials got underway with more finals contested between the nation’s best junior athletes at the National Stadium yesterday. Hydel High School’s Nastassia Fletcher was the pick of the crowd in the girls’ under17 400 metres final, winning the title in 54.70 seconds, almost a full second ahead of Clarendon College’s Tresha-Lee Sutherland, 55.63.

Third place went to Holmwood Technical’s Britania Bailey, who crossed the line in 55.74s Defending Carifta champion, Nickecoy Bramwell, was also in fine form in the boys’ under-17 400, easing ahead of the field in a time of 47.65 to book his spot on the team for the upcoming Carifta Games.

Paul Henry of Foga Road High finished second in 48.65, while Ardenne High School’s Zachary Rowe was third in 49.22. The title in the girls’ under-20 400 final went to Abigail Campbell out of Hydel High, who ran a personal best, 52.83, to finish ahead of St Elizabeth Technical High School’s (STETHS) Shanque Williams, who also set a lifetime best of 53.08. Kelly-Ann Carr of Edwin Allen was third in yet another personal best, 53.64.

Kingston College’s (KC) Marcinho Rose proved his class in the boys’ under-20 400, clocking the fastest time for a schoolboy this season to win the title in 46.36.

Jevaughn Powell was second, diving across the line in 46.84, while Maggotty High’s Zachary Wallace was third in 47.44. Rose was confident he would cross the line ahead of his competitor­s and is aiming to lower his time as the season continues.

“I was saying that I really wanted to win, so I was giving it my best. My head was clear, honestly. I was really confident but I don’t want to say anything yet, so I just have to put in some more work and keep on going.”

There was an intense battle in the boys’ under-20 high jump final between Calabar High’s Jevontae Grant and Jamaica College’s Chavez Penn.

Grant would get the better of Penn on the day, setting a new personal best, 2.05 metres, to claim the title. Penn was second with 2.00.

The 100-metre finals closed day two at the trials and Natrece East took the first title on the event schedule when she won the girls’ under-17 final in 11.62 seconds, finishing ahead of Poshanna-Lee Blake of Hydel, 11.82. Third was St Jago High’s Adora Campbell, 11.84.

Nyrone Wade won the boys’ under17 title in 10.49, just ahead of Excelsior High’s Malik Nugent, 10.52. Detarje Morgan from St Jago was third in 10.80.

Heavy favourite in the girls’ under-20 final Theianna-Lee Terrelonge recovered from a bad start and powered through the crowd to win the title in 11.24 ahead of Lacovia High’s Sabrina Dockery, 11.49. Shanoya Douglas rounded off the podium positions in 11.57.

Javorne Dunkley out of Elite Performanc­e track club won the boys’ under-20 100 title in 10.32 with St Jago’s Raheem Pinnock, second in 10.44. Khamani Gordon finished third in 10.45.
