Douglas, Card impress in Carifta Trials’ 200m
MUSCHETT HIGH’S Shanoya Douglas and Wolmer’s Boys’Gary Card produced good performances over the 200 metres on yesterday’s final day of competition at the Carifta Trials at the National Stadium.
Competing in the under-20 girls’200m, Douglas, who finished third in the 100m on Saturday, stopped the clock at 22.85 seconds with the wind just a tenth of a second over the legal limit of 2.0 metres per second (mps). Lacovia High’s Sabrina Dockery was second in 23.49 and Edwin Allen High’s Jounee Armstrong third in 23.90.
Despite the illegal wind, Douglas was elated with her sub-23 seconds clocking.
“I am over the moon as I am really pleased with my performance. This has given me a lot of confidence going into the the ISSA/Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships (Champs),” said Douglas who added that she was not surprised by the fast time as her coach told her she was on target to do something special this season,
Her coach, Garth Smythe, was over the moon. “To be honest, I am really excited knowing that she is yet to work out in spikes, and I cant wait to see what she will do in two weeks’ time,” said Smythe. Douglas will go up against Edwin Allen High’s Theianna -Lee Terrelonge and Lacovia High’s Sabrina Dockery in both the 100m and 200m at Champs.
Card, the Corporate Area champion and leader in Class One 200m this season, continued his impressive form after clocking a personal best 20.79 to win the under-20 event. Johan Romaldo Smythe of Muschett, a Class Two athlete and son of the head coach, ended second in 21.19 while Romario Hines of Munro College took third in 21.26.
Wolmer’s Girls’ Natrece East completed the under-17 sprint double. Aided by a 3.2 mps wind, she captured the 200m in 23.86. St Jago’s Shannia Campbell and Adora Campbell were second and third, respectively, in 24.27 and 24.29.
Oshane Jarvis of Green Island High won the under-17 boys’ 100m in 22.39 ahead of Calabar High’s Bryan Walker (22.41) and Cornwall College’s Thomas Daley, 23.14.
Edwin Allen’s Kellyann Carr was an impressive winner in the under-20 girls’ 400m hurdles. She stopped the clock at 58.50 to get the better of Aaliah Mullings of Hydel (59.41). Natassia Fletcher of Hydel, the winner of the flat 400m, won the under-17 400m hurdles in 1:02.37 ahead of St Jago’s Alysia Carty, 1:04.49.
Shamer Blake of Elite Performance won the under-20 boys’400m hurdles in 51.05. Princewell Martin of Jamaica College took second in 51,52, with Merrick Richards of Kingston College third in 51.85.
In field events action, Hydel’s Natassia Burrell led the way after capturing the under-20 girls’ javelin with a distance of 40.91 metres. St Jago’s Kimieka Smith (34.76m ) and Imani Lowe (34.18m) of St Catherine High ended second and third, respectively.
Richelle Sterling of St Elizabeth Technical won the under-20 girls’ triple jump with a distance of 12.88m competing in a positive wind of 3.6 mps. Sabrina Atkinson of Hydel finished second with 12.41m and Julissa Knight of Holmwood Technical was third with 12.27m.
Jaeda Robinson of Immaculate Conception high won the under-17 girls’ triple jump with a distance of 12.48m. Zavien Bernard of Hydel was second with 11.80m.
