1971:
The Jamaica Federation of Women held a tea party sponsored by the West St Andrew Division, chairman for which was Mrs Bromley Johnson. The party was held at the Bromley residence at 2 Gloucester Avenue, Barbican, as another fundraising drive.
1972:
David Coore was appointed deputy prime minister of Jamaica. His appointment to the position by Prime Minister Michael Manley was announced by Clifford Campbell following Coore’s swearing-in as minister of finance.
1973:
The Eastern Athletic Championships held at the National Stadium produced a new champion. A strong all-round team from St Mary High School dethroned defending champions Titchfield High School by 17 1/2 points.
1974:
Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism P.J. Patterson announced in the House of Representative that the 1959 agreement between the Government and the Esso Oil Refinery is to be renegotiated. Mr Patterson said that renegotiation of the agreement was an important part of the development of a long-term policy for the oil industry in Jamaica.
1974:
A bill was tabled seeking to repeal the Tonnage Tax Law. Its objective was to abolish tonnage tax on imported goods in the interest of conformity with arrangements made between countries in the Caribbean Common Market for a common external tariff of import duties. Another bill tabled sought to amend the Constabulary Force Law to give greater power to the commissioner of police for more efficient disposal of certain goods in the custody of the police.
