Urgent call for CARICOM intervention in Haiti
THE EDITOR, Madam:
I WRITE with profound concern regarding the current state of affairs in Haiti and the pressing need for CARICOM’s decisive intervention. It is imperative that CARICOM assumes a central role in facilitating a collective effort among the Haitian people to confront their challenges.
Of particular concern is any inclination by the Jamaican government to align itself with the USA or other foreign powers to resolve Haiti’s issues. History has repeatedly demonstrated the failure of such approaches, resulting in heightened casualties and deepening crises. Instead, I advocate for an inclusive approach that actively involves all stakeholders, including the gangs.
While some may question the feasibility of negotiating with numerous gang leaders, it is vital to recognise that this process transcends mere agreement-seeking; it is about grasping the underlying causes of the issues at hand. Comparable processes in courtrooms globally underscore the effectiveness of engaging with diverse perspectives.
Moreover, caution is warranted regarding the involvement of external entities, such as recent proposals for Kenyan police assistance in peacekeeping efforts. We must heed warnings against blindly outsourcing solutions to wealthier nations, as wisdom is not exclusive to them. Poorer nations must resist the temptation to offload their burdens on to others, especially if it perpetuates dependency through financial transactions.
Hence, I propose the establishment of a collaborative working group comprising CARICOM representatives and Haitian thought l eaders. This coalition should engage comprehensively with civil society, i ncluding the gangs, to craft a holistic solution garnering widespread support and empowering Haiti towards self-determination.
Effective communication of this recommended process is essential – it must neither be rushed nor excessively prolonged. Transparency i n communicating both the process and its outcomes is paramount to ensure public awareness and support. The people of Haiti must be afforded the opportunity to peacefully select and replace their government. With tactful communication, I am confident that the populace will patiently await the implementation of such initiatives.
It is only through a concerted effort, guided by inclusivity and sovereignty, that Haiti can transcend its challenges and pave a path toward a brighter future.
