Haiti deserves Jamaica’s unwavering support
THE EDITOR, Madam:
OUR SHARED history as Caribbean people binds us together, transcending borders and reminding us of our commitment to one another. Today, our neighbours in Haiti face unprecedented violence and turmoil, a crisis that echoes through generations of challenges.
Haiti, the first independent nation in the hemisphere, stands as a beacon of hope for freedom. It has inspired Caribbean and Latin American countries alike to strive for independence. Honoured by African nations, Haiti boasts a rich history, including the coronation of a king and royal family. Its soil holds gems and precious treasures from many African countries, yet it has been seized by the US Military under the guise of safeguarding.
Jamaica shares a special bond with Haiti. Behind the scenes, we have played pivotal roles, offering safe haven to Haitian leaders and citizens during tumultuous times. Our efforts extend beyond Haiti’s borders, aiming to stabilise not only their nation, but also the entire Caribbean region.
Today, we must lend our ears to the voices of Haiti. Our doors remain open, and our commitment to their protection and development stands unwavering. As the crisis deepens, we must be prepared to support our Haitian brothers and sisters. Let us open our shores, welcoming them to our schools, hospitals, workplaces, and homes. Together, we can provide a space for recovery and refuge during these perilous times.
The Government of Jamaica faces an unprecedented challenge – an influx of immigrants like never before. Our infrastructure will be tested, from providing shelter and employment to ensuring healthcare, nutrition, and training. This commitment extends not only to Jamaicans, but also to our brothers and sisters in Haiti.
As we prepare for this humanitarian endeavour, let us remember that our shared history calls us to action. Haiti’s resilience and spirit deserve our unwavering support. Let us stand together, ready to welcome those who seek safety and hope within our island shores.
